About Finca Maputo
Verena Blaser is a trained midwife and Henry Gaipor a trained surgeon. They met each other in Burundi during their time with Doctors Without Borders. Back in Ecuador, Henry's homeland, they worked in the joint practice as a midwife and surgeon.
In 2009 the decision was made to buy land and do something else. La Perla, a small village northwest of Quito in the province of Pichincha, offered this opportunity. They only found out that they produce specialty coffee when they won first place at the first Taza D'orada, and that their coffee then traded very well.
In the meantime, 5 people work full-time on the finca all year round and up to 43 pickers during the main harvest. What remains is the high and constant quality. Finca Maputo consists of four smaller fincas. The different varieties are processed according to type.
More on the variety
Hybrido 9 is an F1 hybrid, the mother is an F2 plant from Ethiopia crossed with Typica. This hybrid tastes very similar to the Typica we had from Finca Maputo last year. The sweetness is a bit more berry and floral, also a very nicely balanced coffee with lots of caramel and tropical fruits.
